2025 Student Spotlight: Celebrating Student Growth & Resilience

The Antelope Valley Union High School District’s Student Spotlight celebrates students who have demonstrated remarkable personal growth and resilience in overcoming challenges throughout their high school journey. These students have shown tremendous determination and progress despite facing obstacles. Nominated by their counselors who have witnessed their struggles and triumphs firsthand, these spotlighted students represent the inspiring stories of perseverance that often go unnoticed. As they wrap up this chapter and graduate, the Student Spotlight shines a light on the hard-earned achievements and personal victories so that they receive the recognition they deserve.

Jhuan Yong – Highland High School

Jhuan Yong was destined for greatness from birth. Moving here from Ecuador at a young age Jhuan showed resilience through life challenges. By senior year, he had become a dependable leader, serving as a TA in the counseling office, supporting students and families with empathy and professionalism. He also thrived academically, earning a 3.5 GPA, and actively participated in JROTC, the swim team, and the multicultural club.

Now, Jhuan is preparing to attend Cal State Bakersfield, where he will major in Criminal Justice. His goal is to become a police officer and give back to the community that helped shape him.

Sang Nguyen – Quartz Hill High School

Sang’s journey is a remarkable example of resilience and determination. Born in Vietnam, he immigrated to the United States halfway through high school. Moving from San Jose to Quartz Hill High School, Sang adapted with exceptional grace, turning a challenging start into a story of triumph.

Sang’s passion for learning is infectious. He tackles challenging coursework with enthusiasm, often needing guidance to avoid overloading his schedule. His curiosity drives him to research and engage in thoughtful discussions, inspiring peers and teachers alike. As a natural leader, Sang uplifts his school community, fostering positivity and engagement. His vibrant energy transforms any space, leaving a lasting impression.

Sang’s moral grounding, clear goals, and support for family and friends define his character. His journey from Vietnam to becoming a standout student at Quartz Hill High School shows his potential to make a meaningful impact in college and beyond, representing any institution with pride.

Marquest “Quest” Gant – Lancaster High School

Marquest “Quest” Gant is a resilient and focused young man who has consistently demonstrated determination, leadership, and a deep commitment to his future. Quest has overcome significant life challenges with grace and perseverance, turning adversity into motivation for academic and personal growth.

Quest has pursued rigorous coursework, including AP Government, English, and Studio Art, while maintaining a GPA in the 2.8–3.0 range. His research into health disparities affecting the Black community reveals his intellectual curiosity and passion for social justice. Quest has also been active in Robotics Club and Black Student Union, and he brings a collaborative, forward-thinking mindset to every space he enters.

His hands-on experiences in engineering, internships with Black Men in White Coats and Blacks in Scrubs, and work at the Boys & Girls Club all underscore his commitment to becoming a future Black surgeon dedicated to equity in healthcare. Quest also serves as his family’s financial advisor—testament to his maturity and leadership beyond the classroom.

Quest’s goal to attend an HBCU, particularly Howard University, reflects his desire to grow in an environment that nurtures Black excellence.

Dae’sha Carrington – Eastside High School

Dae’sha Carrington is the definition of perseverance and purpose. As a Resilient Scholars Ambassador, Dae’sha has proven that no matter how many times life demands a fresh start, determination will always find a way forward.

Throughout her academic journey, Dae’sha has had to navigate more transitions than most. While these changes could have discouraged many, Dae’sha used them as fuel to grow stronger and remain committed to her education.

One of Dae’sha’s proudest accomplishments was the opportunity to speak at a university in Northern California, where she shared her powerful story about her experience in foster care. Her honesty and strength left a lasting impact on both students and faculty, inspiring others to look beyond statistics and see the human resilience behind every foster youth’s journey.

At every school, she left her mark—not just through academic excellence, but through compassion, leadership, and a voice that advocated for students facing instability. As a Resilient Scholars Ambassador, Dae’sha became a role model for her peers, showing that resilience isn’t just about surviving—it’s about using your story to empower others.

Now, as she graduates with the Class of 2025, Dae’sha looks ahead with clarity and confidence. Whether she’s pursuing college, a career, or continuing her role as a changemaker in the community, one thing is clear: Dae’sha Carrington is unstoppable.

Ma Shania Ojastro (Lorraine)

Lorraine, a senior student who came to America from the Philippines in 2023, quickly became known for her bright smile and uplifting presence. Her warmth and positivity could light up any room, often masking the personal challenges she faced. Despite adjusting to a new country, Lorraine immersed herself in campus life with impressive dedication. She was actively involved in ROTC, ASB, and the Asian Club, all while taking on the demands of AP and honors courses.

Behind her ever-present smile was a story of resilience. Lorraine had to navigate the emotional challenges of leaving the family that raised her in the Philippines and adjusting to a new and unfamiliar home environment. Frequent extended trips back to the Philippines, yet she remained committed to staying involved and engaged. Lorraine’s ability to persevere through adversity, all while spreading joy to those around her, is a testament to her strength and character.
