Youth 4 Justice Summit Helps Students Build Connections with the Community

Students from across the district spent two days receiving an introduction to the justice system in multiple aspects of the legal field during the Youth 4 Justice event. AVUHSD and Future Leaders of America hosted law enforcement and legal professionals at the AV Fairgrounds as they shared their experiences and made valuable connections with students.

Over the course of the two-part event, students were divided into six groups for sessions where they received an inside look into different law enforcement branches, the judicial system, and prevention education.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP), Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD), and Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) sessions emphasized the importance of their role in public safety and answered student questions about their time in law enforcement. LASD staged a “Don’t Shoot” simulator, and the Lancaster Police Department created interactive activities with special goggles to show students the effects of driving impaired. All groups also gave students more specific information about their sector and the unique challenges and situations they face.

Students also received information from Fight Fentanyl AV on addiction, drug abuse prevention, and the drastic effects fentanyl has inflicted on the youth. They had an open discussion about ways they can promote making smart choices and encourage young people to stay sober.

Thank you to all the incredible district staff, volunteers, law enforcement officers, legal professionals, and other organizations who took part in this educational experience for our students. A special thanks to the Future Leaders of America and the Highland Choir and Colorguard for their contributions to this powerful event. This is an invaluable opportunity for our students to envision an alternative path for their future careers and creates a bridge between our students and the community they live in.
